Rudolph
William Louis "Rudy" Giuliani III (born May 28, 1944) is an American lawyer and
Republican politician from the state of New York.
He gained his first fame as a United States Attorney prosecuting high-profile
cases including ones against organized crime. He served as Mayor of New York
City from 1994 to 2001, where he gained credit for reducing crime and improving
the quality of life in the city, but also suffered adverse publicity due to
relationships in his personal life. He then gained national attention for his
role during and after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade
Center[1] that led him to be named Time's 2001 Person of the Year. His public
visibility in the days following the attacks earned him the nickname "America's
Mayor."
Since leaving office as Mayor of New York, Giuliani has pursued business and
legal interests. In February 2007 Giuliani filed a statement of candidacy for
the Republican nomination for the 2008 presidential campaign.
